Steinlen Journal (Lait pur Stérilisé)

Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen employed the most beloved members of his household—his young daughter Colette and three little house cats—to convey a message of healthfulness in the Quillot Brothers Dairy advertisement for pasteurized milk, Lait pur stérilisé de la Vingeanne (1894).

The vivid and endearing image glows with Steinlen's warmth and humanity. His commitment to social commentary lasted throughout his long and extremely prolific career, which included publishing hundreds of illustrations for books and journals. A heartwarming observation, like the thoughtful Colette tasting the milk to make sure it is not too hot for the family pets, might be just the kind of thing we would record in this lovely journal today.
