Folies-Bergère / La Loïe Fuller by Jules Chéret

Folies-Bergère / La Loïe Fuller by Jules Chéret

This image brings to life the wild movement of dancer Loïe Fuller as she whirls gossamer-thin skirts in the cabaret’s multi-colored stage lights. Electric lights were rare in Paris in the 1890s, and Chéret emphasizes this selling point for the Folies-Bergére by surrounding the American-born performer with a black background.

This work was featured in the Driehaus Museum’s 2017-2018 exhibition, L'Affichomania: The Passion for French Posters.
