Bust of Miss Marcelle Lender by Henri Toulouse-Lautrec

Actress Marcelle Lender captivated Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec in her 1895 performance in the operetta Chilpéric at the Théâtre des Variétés in Paris. The artist attended the production to see her more than 20 times and created several portraits. Here, Lender seems to be mid-song, in a cropped composition with a dazzling variety of textures that convey the movement of her dancing, from the blue splatters on her neckline to the hurried strokes in her green cape.

This work was featured in the Driehaus Museum’s 2020-2022 exhibition, PAN: Prints of the Avant-Garde Europe 1895-1900.
