An unsung element of cocktail history was the major role African-American bartenders made to the development of cocktail culture as we know it. Among these was Tom Bullock (1872-1964), who worked in both Louisville and St. Louis in the early-20th century, and became particularly renowned for the quality of his mint juleps. He also became the first African-American bartender to collect his many recipes in a cocktail guide, The Ideal Bartender published in 1917 on the eve of Prohibition.
