The Driehaus Museum Nickerson Collection Cufflinks recall the design found in the stenciled canvas ceiling panels above the Italian Renaissance style bedroom of Mr. Nickerson.
The merchant princes of 16th century Italy helped the Renaissance thrive as they poured their money into the arts, education, and philosophy. Hundreds of years later, the wealthy businessmen of the Gilded Age ushered in a similar cultural rebirth in America through philanthropy. The palatial homes of these nouveaux riches needed a visual language to match their new identity of grandeur. Motifs of Renaissance Italy, evoking the abundance of those merchant princes, became a most suitable style—especially for banker, art collector, and philanthropist Samuel Mayo Nickerson. There is no doubt he would have chosen to fastened his sleeves with these princely cufflinks, too.
