Handmade ceramic art tiles from J. & J. G. Low Art Tile Works (Chelsea, Massachusetts, 1877-1902) are a prominent decorative element found throughout the Nickerson Mansion. During the Gilded Age, possession of such tile suggested ambition, success, and great American taste. It was also a new innovative material used in Chicago for the first time in wall and floor covering.
L'esperance Tile Works has preserved these cutting edge designs in reproduced handmade tiles as functional objects used in the home today. The Moorish designs in these trivets reflect tile designs found throughout the Nickerson Mansion.
