During the Gilded Age, smoking in front of Ladies was unacceptable. Samuel M. Nickerson navigated this social rule by building a designated smoking room in his new home. Today the we no longer allow smoking in the Museum but these cigar pens are a fun nod to the days when men would enjoy a cigar and an after dinner drink in a private space of their own.
